Ugh.
hello, my name is Mia, and i have been searching for writers in southern az. i found this great site for just that when I realized that there had not been a post in 2 years. If Marzo wasn’t more stoked to be doing what he’s doing than uncomfortable with it, he wouldn’t do it. You’re not a surfer, so you really don’t understand, but he gets to surf every day and live just for that. He’s lucky to have Quicksilver, as his mother would tell you. Otherwise he would never have gotten to understand himself as well as he does and may instead be bagging groceries and seen as a lazy stoner. Keith,
That’s a great point. Yet, I can’t help wondering if that’s what Clay wants. Maybe he just wants to be left alone, but anyone who has talent in anything seems to get drawn into this corporate structure, which works for some people and less for others (think Kurt Cobain). It’s like Faust making the pact with the Devil. In my opinion, anyway.

I think you harken back to the sixties; soul-surfers went the way of dinosaurs with the growth of competitive surfing. Clay will get to surf the best breaks in the world, get his picture taken wearing his sponsors crap and displaying their stickers on his board, while making a lot of money. Asperger syndrome and ASD in general have gotten press. Everyone wins.

Hey…this is great stuff. I saw the post a while back and said i’d get around to reading it but after seeing you last night realized I hadn’t. These thoughts and questions you pose are fantastically intruiging. I, too, as a middle-class raised child had thought many of these very same exact thoughts. Well said. And the bleach reference was perfect as I remember one of my mom’s ket ingredients in her home (even to this day–she’s 89) is to have a gallon of Linco under her wash tubs in the basement. The theme/concept for American Empire is terrific…keep developing it.

Great post, Michael! I don’t know–I like the beard. You could totally start wearing plaid and carrying an axe over your shoulder, or invest in a viking helmet, or I guess if all else fails, the shopping cart could make a statement (the “poor writer” is always a good one!). But really, great thoughts on a difficult subject.

Goes right along with your tree and forest metaphor, though, Mr. Nash. About how the burning of the forest allows little shoots to sprout. Though I’m not sure how Che Guevara fits into that, unless you are the reincarnate Che wandering around in the developing forest sprinkling fertilizer on the shoots. In wader boots and a Panama hat. Hmmm, that’s not bad.
